*ONE THING Initiative

COVID-19 has put new and unexpected pressures on local churches. I know you’re feeling it and the GO Center welcomes the opportunity to come alongside you. There’s a very popular book in the marketplace called The ONE Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results by Gary Keller with Jay Papasan. Let me tell you one thing about The ONE Thing. The authors make a simple claim, that productivity is driven by purpose and priority. They identify purpose as the Big One Thing and priority as the Small One Thing. Purpose is our big picture, the WHY behind all that we do. For us, that Big One Thing might be expressed as making Jesus known or going and making disciples or glorifying God and enjoying Him forever or reaching a community. The challenge is that we struggle to prioritize a Small One Thing that would significantly move us toward our Big One Thing.

Why don’t we prioritize? Because there are a thousand and one things coming at us all the time and all of them seem important. So, we multitask in an effort to cover all the bases. Here are a few zingers about multitasking from Keller and Papasan:

People can actually do two or more things at once…but, like computers, what we can’t do is focus on two things at once. Our attention bounces back and forth.

When you try to do two things at once, you either can’t or won’t do either well. If you think multitasking is   an effective way to get more done, you’ve got it backward. It’s an effective way to get less done.

It’s not that we have too little time to do all the things we need to do, it’s that we feel the need to do too many things in the time we have.

As true evangelicals, knowing our purpose – our Big One Thing – is not our challenge. Our challenge is pinpointing our priority, our Small One Thing, and proactively pursuing that Small One Thing without distraction. Focusing on the Small One Thing that will truly move us toward our Big One Thing can level up our missional ministry productivity. Remember, in John 15, what is the first thing the vinedresser does? He prunes away every branch that does not bear fruit.

Bottom Line: Here’s the GO Center Offer – As your partner, we’re here to help you effectively focus on your missional ministry ONE Thing.
